Generation Innovation

In relation to the theme of positive representation of Blackness, I’ve chosen to capture my mother and grandmother in a candid shot during an at-home haircut. These photos show the reversal of nurturing roles as my mother, who would share stories of her mother styling her hair as a kid, now styles my grandmother’s into a unique cut.

Media today often portrays appropriated styles and fashion of Black women with limited images of them as the source. From the tattoos, nails, accessories, and hair, I’ve chosen to highlight the act of care and style across two generations.
