Society’s standards placed against Black males are extremely harmful and is one of the reasons why so many Black males are targeted more by the police. Sadly in today's world, there is an increase in the number of stories and videos being shared about young Black men being racially profiled and having their lives taken away from them.
We are not a threat, we are not all thugs and we are not all gangsters. We are people who deserve to grow up and live a life that we were gifted to have.
It worries me at times knowing I have a younger brother that could be wrongly accused just from the colour of his skin or by the clothes he wears. He has dreams to grow up, accomplish big things and he deserves the chance to.
It’s time to stop making assumptions about who society thinks we are, now is the time to understand who we really are; ordinary and innocent people who have dreams and desires, like the rest of the world.
Let’s change the way the media portrays Black men and women.
