ABOUT “A Silent War”

Runtime: 28 minutes
By: VOA Africa

“A Silent War: Stories of Human Suffering and Resilience in Congo" is a poignant documentary that sheds light on  the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in its eastern region. Through a compelling 28-minute narrative, the film delves into the lives of individuals who have been internally displaced due to persistent intercommunal militia attacks and military operations, unraveling the profound impact of the conflict on the Congolese people.

Émeraude Domingos-Mbuku

M. Émeraude Domingos-Mbuku is an award-winning storyteller, producer and film programmer whose practice weaves together her identity as the daughter of Congolese refugees and a first-generation Canadian woman. Black African womanhood and feminism in the North American visual direct the focus of her work, but an interest in hyper-femininity and how society views Black women feeds the aesthetic. Émeraude is a 2018 CineFam Feature Film Incubator fellow, a 2022 OYA Media Group Emerging Filmmakers fellow, and part of the 2024 class of the CaribbeanTales Black Incubator and Studio Access Project. Her work has been screened on CBC Gem, at Breakthroughs Film Festival, Regent Park Film Festival, CaribbeanTales International Film Festival, and St. John's International Women's Film Festival.

Tai Salih

Tai Salih (she/her), E-RYT® 500, YACEP®, is an unapologetic intersectional pan-African abolitionist and fierce womanist from Sudan. As a multi-disciplinary social and healing justice educator and facilitator, she dismantles oppressive systems through her diverse roles as an integrative counsellor, social justice advocate, anti-oppression educator, wellness ambassador with lululemon, and emergency response reservist with the Canadian Red Cross. Her life's mission is rooted in decolonization and the radical empowerment of marginalized communities.

Forced to flee Sudan during the second civil war and following Bashir’s military coup, Tai arrived in Canada as a refugee with a revolutionary spirit. She founded the Red Ma'at Collective and the Red Ma’at Healing Centre to challenge and transform oppressive structures, all while completing her designation as a registered psychotherapist. Tai's relentless commitment to healing her own traumas drives her insurgent efforts to ignite profound change and liberation within the community.
